Something I’ve Noticed

Lots of different benefits with Demetrius’ new diet – more engaged, more willing to start a conversation, more willing to tell you how he feels and what he likes and dislikes (there may be positives and negatives with that!).

One other thing I’ve noticed is how his palate has expanded.  Food he would not otherwise have tried is now willing to be eaten, simply because the overall choices are so limited.  He can only have french fries periodically – so he will now eat rice and baked potatoes, he’s eating more and different types of veggies beyond peas and broccoli, and he’s had braised ribs and hamburgers (on a tapioca bun – gluten free at Disney!) which he would have never had touched before if he could have gotten his hands on chicken fingers.

He’s also turned into that lean, mean fighting machine he once was, and his energy is up.

Now, to chase him all over Universal Studios today…..

Three Bites

Demetrius and I stopped at Starbucks after the Lexington Children’s Theatre, and he ate this, in three bites.

Daddy: You really liked this!

Demetrius (cheeks full of cake): Yes I do, can we go now so I can play on the computer!?!

Absolutely, can I get my coffee first, though! :-)

A Gluten & Dairy Free Day

Good morning.  A few of you have asked what a gluten & dairy free day looks like for me, since I’m attempting to do his with Super D. Okay, here is what a weekend day looks like for a Dad trying to do the same with his son:

Breakfast: one cup of frozen mixed vegetables, one cup of spinach (approx), four egg whites, half of a yellow onion, three strips of bacon cut up in the scramble and coffee with Sweet N Low.

No lunch, but a Venti Starbucks Soy Vanilla Latte.

Right now (6:25pm) , a twenty ounce Coca-Cola, five small, round slices of salami.

7:15pm, one chicken breast with french beans, broccoli, a baked potato garnished with peach salsa, two glasses of David Bruce Petit Syrah

8:15pm – Soy Cream (Vanilla) with frozen pineapples, mangos, strawberries and mixed nuts…

So there you go. Whaddya think?

Dairy and Gluten-Free D

Demetrius is going dairy and gluten free, and I’ve already seen some positive results!

So Kim and I decided that we’d try the dairy and gluten free diets with Demetrius.  My gosh, let me just tell you that I noticed immediately, when I got back for the Holidays, a change in the boy.  He made better eye contact, and we had more cycles in our conversation.  The ultimate example:

Demetrius, when watches TV, is almost unreachable.  Often we just have to shut it off (not unlike other kids sometimes, but certainly most of the time with this boy) to even get him to answer a question.  Some of you might just say we shouldn’t turn the TV on at all, but frankly, we don’t see that as real world option.  It is often a behavior tool if used right. Anyway, not this blog posting for this subject….

I came home from walking Buddy, and Demetrius was watching TV. He heard me come in the garage and walk into the kitchen. He sat up turned around on the couch (during TV) and looked right at me and said, “Daddy, are we going to go to the gym now?”

I was stunned.  I answered, and he said, “Well, let’s go.”

Maybe to you, this isn’t a big deal, but with Demetrius, to start a conversation, while watching TV, my gosh, this is huge.

Today, he brought his ‘special lunch’ and we are becoming more and more strict with it.

I can’t wait to talk to him more about what he wants.  He’ll probably even talk me into taking him to Target! (Well, he does that anyway…but maybe he’ll be more direct and conversational about it!)
