Demetrius is going dairy and gluten free, and I’ve already seen some positive results!
So Kim and I decided that we’d try the dairy and gluten free diets with Demetrius. My gosh, let me just tell you that I noticed immediately, when I got back for the Holidays, a change in the boy. He made better eye contact, and we had more cycles in our conversation. The ultimate example:
Demetrius, when watches TV, is almost unreachable. Often we just have to shut it off (not unlike other kids sometimes, but certainly most of the time with this boy) to even get him to answer a question. Some of you might just say we shouldn’t turn the TV on at all, but frankly, we don’t see that as real world option. It is often a behavior tool if used right. Anyway, not this blog posting for this subject….
I came home from walking Buddy, and Demetrius was watching TV. He heard me come in the garage and walk into the kitchen. He sat up turned around on the couch (during TV) and looked right at me and said, “Daddy, are we going to go to the gym now?”
I was stunned. I answered, and he said, “Well, let’s go.”
Maybe to you, this isn’t a big deal, but with Demetrius, to start a conversation, while watching TV, my gosh, this is huge.
Today, he brought his ’special lunch’ and we are becoming more and more strict with it.
I can’t wait to talk to him more about what he wants. He’ll probably even talk me into taking him to Target! (Well, he does that anyway…but maybe he’ll be more direct and conversational about it!)
